Warner Walz Johnson

Warner Johnson passed away December 22, 2013 in Quincy, Illinois. He was born August 26, 1920 in Hays, Kansas, the son of E. Warner and Kathryn Walz Johnson. He was a 1938 graduate of Hoxie High School (formerly Sheridan Community High School) in Hoxie, KS. He graduated from the school of horology at Bradley University and earned his PhD at the Institute of Social Research in Lausanne, Switzerland. Dr. Johnson enlisted in the U.S. Army in World War II and served in New Guinea, the Philippines and in the occupation of Japan. He operated a retail store in Hoxie for ten years before studying horology. He worked at Weiser’s Jewelers in Peoria before moving to Quincy in 1961. He retired as Director of the School of Horology at Gem City College in 1986 and was named Director Emeritus and served as a consultant. He was a former member of the American Legion and the VFW. He was a member of Hoxie Masonic Lodge #348 A.F. and A.M., Quincy Consistory and Mohammed Shrine in Peoria. He was a member of Psi Delta Omega Horology fraternity, Cedar Crest Country Club where he was an avid golfer, and a member of the Elks Lodge in Quincy. He was a former member of the Jewelers’ Association in Missouri and Illinois, and a former member of the National and American Watchmakers’ Institute. Warner was preceded in death by his parents. Services: Friday (Dec 27, 2013) at 3 pm in the Hansen-Spear Funeral Home. Graveside Services will be 10:30 A.M., Monday, December 30, 2013 in the Hoxie City Cemetery. Memorials: Gem City College Scholarship Foundation and may be sent in care of Mickey-Leopold Funeral Home, PO Box, 987, Hoxie, KS 67740.
