Walter John Hemman passed away Thursday, July 18, 2013, at the Hays Medical Center in Hays, Kansas at the age of 81. Walter was born April 30, 1932 in a dugout on the bank of the North Solomon River in SE Rexford, Kansas to Louis and Ida (Herring) Hemman. Walter attended the Lutheran Parochial School, Parnell School House and graduated from Sheridan Community High School in 1950. Walter married Shirley Mowry on February 14, 1965 at Immanuel Lutheran Church near Hoxie. They were blessed with three children: Treva, Nathan, and Darcee. Walter worked for newspapers most all of his life. His younger years were spent at several different newspapers and later in Hoxie where he co-owned and later owned and ran the Sentinel. Walter was a lifetime member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church. Walter enjoyed woodworking, reading, watching golf, the weather channel and puttering around his garage. He loved helping his children and was a very loving husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend. Left to cherish Walter’s memory is his wife Shirley of the home; children, Treva Levering of Coldwater, Nathan and wife Cindy of Seneca, and Darcee Redden and husband Carl of Gypsum; sisters, Louise Oelke of Hoxie, Irene Hedge and husband Willard of Doctors Inlet, FL and Lil Harms and husband Bob of Canyon City, CO; 12 grandchildren, Cameron (Matthew) Manaugh, Bailee, Cody & Cooper Levering, Julia, Anthony, Mary, Nicholas, Sarah, Timothy, Clarrisa and Daniel Hemman; and 2 great-granddaughters, Madison & Caylee Manaugh. Preceding Walter in death are his parents Louis & Ida Hemman and his brother Norman. Precious memories of Walter will live on forever and bring comfort to the hearts of his family and friends. As Walter always said, “Keep the faith” and before surgery “I’ll See you sooner or I’ll see you later, but I’ll see you.”
