Vergie Wente passed away Sunday, April 13, 2014, at the Hays Medical Center , in Hays at the age of 77. She was born April 24, 1936 to Virgil D. and Hazel (Storer) Wennihan in Allison, KS. Vergie lived in Sheridan County all her life and attended two years at Sheridan Community High School. She graduated from Colby Community College with her GED and took some additional college courses. She was married to Lloyd Wente on July 23, 1953. They were blessed with four children, Allen, Rhonda, Daniel, and Lynne. They later divorced. Vergie was a tireless worker. In her early years, she worked for the Northwest Kansas Library System driving the book mobile from 1968 to 1970. In 1971, she was elected as Clerk of the District Court and appointed as the Chief Clerk of the 15th Judicial Distirct in 1976, a position she never retired from. She was a member of the Kansas Association of District Court Clerks and Administrators. In her spare time, she cleaned multiple businesses in Hoxie. She loved driving. During harvest she drove truck for some of the local farmers, and when she wasn’t busy doing other things, took leisurely drives around town. Vergie enjoyed sports. In her younger years she excelled in track and softball. When she no longer participated in sports she loved watching them on TV. Vergie was baptized in the Church of Christ in 1951. She later became a member of the Hoxie Christian Church. Vergie had a true servant’s heart. She lived for and loved her children and grandchildren very much. Always selfless, she would do anything for them always putting them first. Vergie was a loyal and loving woman, always doing whatever she could for others. Vergie is survived by her son Daniel Lloyd Wente of Hoxie; daughters, Rhonda White and husband Tom of Hoxie, and Lynne Tull and husband Rick of Topeka; brother, Pat Wennihan and wife Sharron of Bakersfield, California; sisters, Nadine Wente and husband Lloyd of Hennesey, Oklahoma, Carol Bell and husband Ron of MiWuk Village, California, and June McGatlin of Renton, Washington; grandchildren Kelsey Carver and fiance Kody Epp, Spring Plummer, Shane Wente and wife Audra, Landon Carver, Dason Wente, Evan White, Cole Hawks, Curtis White, Tayler Hawks, Victor Wente, Danaya Wente; and great-grandchildren Jailen Yoder, Shayanne Wente, Landyn Plummer, Kane Rosales, Ace Plummer, Macy Wente, Gunner Wente, and Gage Rosales Vergie was preceded in death by her parents Virgil and Hazel Wennihan; son, Allen Charles Wente; brothers Fred and Mike Wennihan, and an infant brother. Vergie spent her entire life serving others unselfishly, unconditionally, and with a joyful, happy, and loving heart. Whether it was children and grandchildren, friends and neighbors, or business associates and colleagues, Vergie would do anything for anybody. She leaves behind a life and legacy that will never be replaced, but will always be remembered by all who knew her. She was greatly loved, and will be greatly missed.
