Vera H. Morgan passed away Wednesday morning, May 8, 2013, at the Sheridan County Health Complex Long Term Care at the age of 97. She was born January 12, 1916 to Henry and Mary (Ochs) Mowry at the family farm in Sheridan County, Kansas. Vera attended Northern Lights country school near Hoxie and graduated from Sheridan Community High School with the class of 1934. She received her teaching certificate from Fort Hays State University and taught for 7 years at various Sheridan County country schools. She taught fourth grade at Hoxie Grade School from 1943 to 1948. Vera was united in marriage to Charles Lloyd Morgan on April 18, 1948 at the First Presbyterian Church in Hoxie. Vera had a passion for baking and cooking. She enjoyed working with her hands, from crocheting and quilting, to working in her flower garden. She loved her family, especially the time with her grandchildren. Vera was a faithful member of the First Presbyterian Church where she served as an Elder and in women’s organizations. She was a Girl Scout leader for many years and enjoyed membership in the Parnell Progressive Extension Homemaker’s Unit. Survivors include her daughter, Cheryl Scott and husband Arthur of Hoxie; Verna Lacey and husband Charles of Wichita; sister-in-law Flossie Mowry of Hoxie; grandsons Ty Scott of Lawrence and Blake Scott and wife Cassandra of Baldwin City; and great-grandchildren Melody and Miles Scott. Vera is preceded in death by her parents, Henry and Mary Mowry; husband Charles Lloyd Morgan on October 22, 1995; and brothers Victor Mowry and Verl Mowry. Vera was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. She was a gift from God, and now we must return Vera to His care and know that her family and friends’ lives are richer from her memory.
