Theo Barr

Theo Barr passed away Saturday, June 11, 2016, at the Sheridan County Health Complex in Hoxie, Kansas at the age of 94. She was born in Sheridan County on May 7, 1922 to the late M. Jay and Carrie (Mowry) Barr. She graduated from Sheridan County High School with the Class of 1940. Shortly thereafter, she began working as a clerk and bookkeeper for Mickey Hardware and Furniture maintaining that steady career, for many years, until her eventual retirement. During her lifetime she lived on four different farms just east of Hoxie until the autumn of 2014, when she entered the long-term care facility. Theo never married, but lived life to the fullest every day with all of her family, friends, and neighbors, with whom she never missed an opportunity to love and laugh. She was a devout lifelong member of the United Methodist Church in Hoxie where she had a perfect attendance record for most years. She taught Sunday School, was a Methodist Youth Fellowship Sponsor, a member of United Methodist Women, and sang in the church choir. She enjoyed farm-life, nurturing a variety of fowl, horses, dogs and cats as well as enjoying bird watching, sports, embroidery, gardening, puzzles, bowling and reading. Our beloved “Aunt Theo” is survived by one niece Carolyn Bell of Quinter; six nephews James J. White and wife Reba of Hoxie, Charles White and wife Jan of Wamego, Albert Lee Barr and wife Carol of Spring, TX, Jack Rowlison and wife Marilyn of Morland, Don Rowlison and wife Melanie of Studley, and Richard Barr and wife Paula of Lawrence; many great-nephews and nieces and their families; and a host of other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents Jay and Carrie Barr; brothers Albert Barr and wife Vera, and Gilbert Barr; sisters Zola White and husband Jim, and Elda Rowlison and husband Johnny ; nieces Marilyn Barr, Betty (White) Corke, Marita (Barr) Jackson, and Charlotte (White) McMillen; and great-nephews Brian White and Jeremy Jackson. Funeral Services will be held at 10:00 am on Friday, June 17, 2016 at the Hoxie United Methodist Church with Pastor Cyd Stein officiating. Burial will follow at the Hoxie City Cemetery. Visitation will be from 10:00 am to 8:00 pm on Thursday, June 16, 2016 at Mickey-Leopold Funeral Home in Hoxie. Memorials are suggested to the Hoxie United Methodist Church, Sheridan County Health Complex Long Term Care Unit, or Donor’s Choice and may be sent in care of Mickey-Leopold Funeral Home, PO Box 987, Hoxie, Kansas 67740.
