Ronnie D. "Red" Morel

November 9, 1943 — April 8, 2014

Ronnie Dorian “Red” Morel passed away Tuesday, April 8, 2014, at Hays Medical Center in Hays, Kansas at the age of 70. He was born November 9, 1943 to Elmer Eugene and Marie Nelda (Bouchey) Morel in San Diego, California. Red graduated from Palco High School with the Class of 1962. He went on to graduate from Fort Hays State College in 1966, where he played football, basketball, and was a member of the track team. Red was blessed with two daughters, Rachelle and Ashley. Red understood the importance of hard work. He spent a lot of hard days and nights working in the oilfield as a roughneck. But he also understood the importance of friendship, living well, and getting the most out of life by doing the things he loved best. Truly a man of charity, Red was a Third Degree Knight of Columbus. He was a good friend who never hesitated to help a brother or neighbor in need. If anybody needed a helping hand, his was always there. As a professional hunting and fishing guide, Webster Lake, of which Morel Cove is a namesake, was just one of the many places Red lived out the real passion of his life, fishing. Fishing wasn’t just something to do in life, fishing was life. Whether it was to relax, rejoice, or reflect, the answer was always, “go fishing.” Red is survived by his mother, Marie Morel of Palco; daughters, Rachelle Eichman and husband Bryant of Palco, and Ashley Morel and fianc? Stephen Desaire of Palco; and sisters, Jackie Rohleder and husband Paul of Salina, and Michelle Iannone and husband Tony of Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Red was preceded in death by his father, Elmer Morel. Red was greatly loved and will be greatly missed. His legacy has taught us all that just like in life, there will be days when the fishing is better than your most optimistic forecast, others when it is worse. But never worry, because any day on the water is better than staying home, and don’t worry about answering the phone, everything will be okay, let’s go fishing.
