Roger Lee Mongeau

July 28, 1947 — November 22, 2017

Roger Lee Mongeau passed away on Wednesday, November 22, 2017 at Hays Medical Center in Hays, Kansas at the age of 70. He was born on July 28, 1947 in Hays to the late Severin “Joe” and Leah June (Conn) Mongeau. He grew up in the Zurich, Kansas area and graduated from Palco High School in Palco, Kansas with the Class of 1965. On July 2, 1966 he was united in marriage to Kirby Simpson at St. Ann’s Catholic Church in Zurich. They were blessed with three daughters, Raina, Tara, and Dara. Shortly after high school Roger attended Vocational Technical School in Goodland, Kansas and later the Law Enforcement Academy where he began a long and distinguished career in law enforcement. Beginning with the Plainville Police Department, Stockton Police Department, and Rooks County Sheriff’s Office, he served for over 25 years, including two terms as Rooks County Sheriff, from 2000-2008. He also taught Kansas Hunter Education Courses, and worked with the Plainville Rescue Squad. He was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed hunting everything, fishing, and camping. When he wasn’t tearing up the dragstrip, he also liked spending time in his woodshop. He was a member of St. Ann’s Catholic Church, Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus, and Blue Knights Motorcycle Club. But of all the time he cherished most, it was when he got to spend it with his family. Roger is survived by his wife Kirby Mongeau of the home in Zurich; daughters Raina Hrabe and husband Ron of Plainville, Tara Garcia and husband John of Burlington, CO, and Dara Dix and husband Pat of McPherson; sister Carolin Pywell and husband George of Zurich; sister-in-law Sandra Altman of Logan; grandchildren Tracey and Josh Post, Julie and Sandon Slaubaugh, Joshua and Terri Hrabe, Nathan and Kathy Garcia, Andrea and Matt Kantaras, Adrien and Chelsea Garcia, Aaron Garcia, and Katie Dix; great-grandchildren Ryleigh, Halle, Camdyn, Elijah, Savanah, Leilah, Jarron, Annabella, Blake, Madison, Ryan Jr., John, Lillian, Natalie, Aubrey, and one on the way; nephews Bentley, Jamie, and Blayne; and nieces Donyell, Dana, Vicki, Stacey, Tina, and Robyn. He was preceded in death by his parents Joe and Leah Mongeau, brother Sam Mongeau, sister Shirley Bissing, grandson Garreth Dix, and great-grandson Jaden Hrabe. Roger was not only a man of honesty and integrity, but of strong faith and character. He was a servant of his family, friends, and neighbors and although he was taken from us too soon, we rejoice that he has gone to his heavenly home, where we look forward to seeing him again. He leaves a legacy of love, joy, and faith that will last for generations to come. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30am on Monday, November 27, 2017 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Plainville. Burial will follow in St. Ann’s Cemetery in Zurich. Visitation will be from 1:00-4:00pm on Sunday at the funeral home with Ladies Guild Rosary at 3:00pm, and from 6:00-8:00pm at the church with Prayer Vigil and Rosary at 7:00pm.
