Opal Laura (Rambo) Barb was born January 28, 1915 to Elic V. and Missouri (Taylor) Rambo on the family farm in Dallas County, Missouri. She passed away Wednesday, September 25, 2013, at the Redbud Village in Plainville, Kansas at the age of 98. She attended school at Pleasant Hope School in Dallas County until the tenth grade before moving to Canton, Kansas to live with her brother “Short” and graduate from Canton High School with the Class of 1934. She was united in marriage to Herbert Leon Barb on June 9, 1934 in Canton. Herb and Opal lived and worked in many places as Herb worked for the Phillip’s Oil Company. In 1944 they transferred to Turkville, Kansas and resided in the Phillip’s 66 camp where they raised their two children. Marlys was born in May, 1935 and Ronald was born in January, 1939. Opal worked for many years in the Turkville school as a substitute teacher and cook before moving to Plainville in 1958 when she began work in the Plainville hospital as a circulating nurse. She was a Lifelong member of the Order of the Eastern Star in Plainville. In addition, Herb and Opal were avid campers. After they retired they spent time camping at most of the lakes in Kansas and Nebraska. As much as Opal loved camping, she loved fishing even more. She was indeed a very skilled fisherwoman. Opal is survived by her son Ronald Barb and wife Glenda of Burkburnett, Texas; granddaughters Susan Mauldin and husband John, Donna Conley and husband Mark, Jackie Holdbrook and husband Jackie, Laurie Shotts and husband Tim (deceased); grandsons Doug Carmichael and Paul Barb; six great-grandchildren; and ten great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband Herbert; daughter Marlys; parents, Elic and Missouri Rambo; six brothers; and four sisters. Opal was a woman of great love and character. She will be truly missed by all her children and friends, but will live on in our hearts and minds as a woman who was truly the Fairest Among Thousands, Altogether Lovely.
