Odilia “Dilly” Catherine (Weber) Riedel passed away Sunday, November 2, 2014, at the Sheridan County Health Complex Long Term Care, in Hoxie, Kansas, at the age of 82. She was born April 23, 1932 to Jakob and Rosa (Herrman) Weber on the Weber homestead in rural Gove County, Kansas. Growing up on the family farm was not an easy life, but it was a good life and one that Dilly loved and was proud of, including her rich Volga German heritage, and her strong Catholic Faith. Dilly married John A. Riedel, June 9, 1956, in Park, Kansas. They were blessed with five children. John and Dilly worked side by side until a farm accident claimed the life of John on December 29, 1997. From the beginning, Dilly was a hard worker. She valued hard work and passed those values on to her own family. After completing the Eighth Grade, she left school to help on the farm as her brothers enlisted to help with the war effort. In 1970 she began work as a clerk for the US Postal Service. In 1983 she became the Postmistress of Park, Kansas and eventually retired in 1999. In addition, she of course raised a family, worked the farm, including building sheds and working on the house, worked as a licensed reflexologist and drove bus for the Wheatland School District USD #292. Dilly was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church of Park, Kansas, the Sacred Heart Altar Society, and NAPUS. Along with work, Dilly loved to have fun and spend time with family. True to her heritage, she loved to Polka and play the accordion. She spoke German, cooked good German food, had a lively spirit, and a stern but loving way of simply “telling it like it was.” Dilly was a strong believer in natural home remedies and taking vitamins and herbs. But above all, Dilly loved her family. Family was the most important. Her dedication was evident in the family she grew up in and the family legacy she leaves behind. Dilly is survived by sons, Steve Riedel (Sharon Batson) of Norton, Kansas and Joe Riedel of Quinter, Kansas; daughters, Carol Wessel (Bill) of Dresden, Kansas, Roberta Pianalto (Burton) of Goodland, Kansas, and Alberta Williams (Roy) of Park, Kansas; grandsons, Jeremy, Shawn, Scott, Adam, and Jacob Riedel, Doug, Jeff, and Jay Wessel, Mark and Matthew Pianalto, and Michael and Cody Williams; granddaughters, Kiedra Hickert, Kami Cohoon, CeeAnn Affolter, Amy Schulte, Kayla Lang, Kim Wessel, Nikki Moos, and Megan Riedel; brothers, Larry Weber of Salina, Kansas, Sil Weber and wife (Esther) Weber, Salina, Kansas; Al Weber (Ann) of Park, Kansas; Sisters, Maggie Gassmann of Quinter, Kansas, and Marie Meier of Hoxie, Kansas; Brother-in-laws, Vern Riedel of St. Peter and Bob Riedel of Topeka, Kansas; Sister-in-laws, Katie Weber of Oakley, Kansas, Leona Kinderknecht, Doris (Dick) Perry, Clara Finan, and Mary Lynn (Francis) Ryan all of Salina, Jeannie (Vernie) Gross of Hays, Kansas, and Vera Hartman of Grainfield, Kansas; 23 Great Grandchildren and 109 nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, John A. Riedel; brothers, Bart Weber (Lydia), Henry Weber (Mary), Msgr. John George Weber, Tony Weber (Rosie), Celestine Weber, Martin Weber (Antonia Weber); sister Philomena Christenson (George); brother-in-laws, Conrad Gassmann and Al Meier; and Sister-in-law, Mary Weber; and 11 nieces and nephews. Dilly was a model and inspiration of hard work, dedication, true love, and strong faith. Success was measured by commitment, perseverance, and of course, love. She was a successful woman, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt, and friend. She valued every moment and has created memories that will last a lifetime in the hearts of all who knew her.
