Norman Rex Gallentine

October 2, 1926 — September 5, 2016

Norman Rex Gallentine passed away Monday, September 5, 2016 at his home in Oberlin, Kansas at the age of 89. He was born on October 2, 1926 on the family farm near Clayton, Kansas to the late John and Zoe (Goodman) Gallentine. He grew up in the Clayton area and graduated from Clayton High School with the Class of 1945. Norman served in the United States Army from 1945 until 1947. On December 27, 1950 he was united in marriage to Julianne Scheetz at St. Joseph Catholic Church in New Almelo, Kansas. Norman is survived by his wife Julie; children Rebecca Rohr and husband Al of Colorado Springs, CO, Emily Waldo and husband Dale of Salina, Gary Gallentine and wife Tracey of Titusville, FL, Gene Gallentine and wife Kristi of Clayton, Rex Gallentine and wife Connie of Milford, and Tami Shaw and husband Joel of Oberlin; 15 grandchildren; and twenty-two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by parents John and Zoe Gallentine; sisters Lora Arnold and Vanetta Anderson. Norman was a diverse man. He was a farmer who loved the land. Guided by his strong work ethic, he tilled the soil to provide for his family. Upon retiring from the farm, he worked for the Good Samaritan Home for 12 years and Creative Dimentions for 9 years. He was a carpenter, and co-owned a cabinet shop in Clayton, Kansas. He designed and built the house that would become their home for 36 years. Wherein his last request was granted - to die in the home he had built. He was a creative engineer without a degree. He could conceive, design, then construct almost anything. When necessity called, Norman cobbled together a narrow wheel base tractor to drill wheat between corn rows using parts from a Model A Ford, a windmill, and other salvaged pieces and parts. 70 years later, with a little oil and gas, the homemade tractor ran again. Norman taught his children by example. Work hard, then play hard. Live life like you only have 89 years to do so. Work all day, drive all night, so your children can have vacations in the Ozarks. He took a small duck shack on Lake Jeffery, Nebraska and created a special vacation home where 19 years of family memories were made. A place where numerous other people came to relax in fellowship. Norman had a gift of giving of himself and his many and varied talents. A young, single mother of three had the fortune of breaking down on the highway across from their place. While the young family was fed and looked after by Julie, Norman applied his skills and soon had them back on the road to Texas. Norman was a great father. Always making sure his visiting children had fuel in their vehicles for their trip back, giving of whatever he had on hand, if he thought you could use it. Ever willing to lend a hand or offer practical advice to solve a problem. More often than not, he had a half dozen possible solutions to any given problem. When some would see problems, Norman saw solutions. Freud said, “I cannot think of any need in childhood as strong as the need for a father’s protection.” Celebration of Life Services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, September 16, 2016 at the Gateway in Oberlin.
