Norma Brownlee passed away October 21, 2015 at the Sheridan County Health Complex in Hoxie, Kansas at the age of 97. She was born October 12, 1918 to Charles and Maude (Shaw) Moore at the family farm north of Cantril, Iowa. The family moved to Buffalo, Missouri in 1934 and she graduated from high school with the class of 1936. Norma met her husband, James Brownlee, who was visiting the area from Kansas, at a youth social and they were married October 15, 1937. They farmed in Missouri for a time before moving to the Satanta, Kansas area in 1943 and on to New Iberia, Louisiana in 1963. Norma returned to Kansas following her husband’s death in 2009. Norma was a homemaker and loved her family. She was a gifted seamstress who made most of her and her children’s clothing. She also enjoyed quilting, embroidery and sports. She played basketball in high school and played on the Missouri All-Star Girls team in 1936. She loved watching her children and grandchildren participate in sports and enjoyed sports on the TV. She was a long time member of Trinity Baptist Church in New Iberia, Louisiana and was involved in many of the activities of the church. Survivors include her sons, James Brownlee Jr. of Murdock, Kansas, Michael Brownlee and wife Mary of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, Robert Brownlee and wife Esther of Holden, Louisiana; daughters, Charlotte Hagaman and husband Lynn of Hillsboro, Barbara Brookshire and husband Larry of Hoxie, Terrie Romero and husband Russell of New Iberia, Louisiana; daughter-in-law, Evelyn Brownlee of Liberal; 15 grandchildren, 38 great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren; one brother, Richard Moore of Bolivar, MO. She was preceded in death by her husband, James, her son, Charles, two great-granddaughters, her parents, and three brothers. Funeral Services are planned for 10:30 Monday, October 26, 2015 at Livingston-Price Funeral Home in Kingman, Kansas. Burial followed in the Lone Star Cemetery, Pretty Prairie, Kansas. Memorials are suggested to the Sheridan County Health Complex LTC or Charles Brownlee Math and Science Endowment Fund, SCCC, Liberal, Kansas. While her hands stitched together quilts to keep her friends and family warm on a cold night, her life stitched together a quilt of love for God, family and friends that will warm their hearts and keep her memories forever.
