Murray G. Custer

November 7, 1934 — February 20, 2014

Murray G. Custer, age 79, passed away Saturday, February 22, 2014, at Hays Medical Center in Hays, Kansas. He was born November 7, 1934, to Benjamin L. and Ruth (Christensen) Custer in Menlo, Kansas. Murray spent his entire life in Sheridan County, Kansas and graduated from Menlo High School, where he also played basketball, with the Class of 1952. Shortly after high school he enlisted in The United States Army and served in the Korean War. He was a member of the V.F.W. Post #6882 in Colby, Kansas. Murray was a farmer, and in his younger days, raised cattle. Farming was not just a job, or a way of life for him, it was his whole life. From the time he was a boy and could start helping with chores, it is all he did, and all he ever wanted to do. He never considered leaving the family farm, or retiring from it, as an option. Murray loved his family and friends, enjoyed coffee with the gang, and was an avid sports fan. He was always game for watching a good game. Murray is survived by his sister Bernetta Nichols of Hugoton, Kansas; nephew Preston Nichols along with his children Tesk and Alek Nichols of Hugoton, Kansas; and niece Joyce Begley and husband Rafe along with their children Ben Sumner and Michael Begley of Liberal, Kansas. He was preceded in death by his parents Ben and Ruth Custer. Although Murray thought of himself as a farmer, plain and simple, he truly was an inspiration and an encouragement to all who knew him. Through his life he taught us to live the life you love, love the life you live, and do good along the way. For then you will find true joy, happiness, and fulfillment in a life well lived, plain and simple.
