Mildred M. Megaffin

January 2, 1942 — November 7, 2017

Mildred Marline (Pottberg) Megaffin passed away on Tuesday, November 7, 2017 at Parkview Care Center in Osborne, Kansas at the age of 75. She was born on January 2, 1942 in Red River County, Texas to the late Kenneth John and Helen Martha (Klopek) Pottberg. She graduated from Downs High School in Downs, Kansas with the Class of 1959 and went on to attend cosmetology school at Salina Hair Academy in Salina, Kansas. On May 29, 1960 she was married to Alvin Britt at Zion Lutheran Church in Downs. Together they had two children, Terry and Cheryl. Alvin passed away on May 13, 1964. Mildred married Scott Megaffin on November 27, 1966 at Faith Lutheran Church in Osborne. They also had two children, Jodi and Rex. Scott passed away on December 22, 2005. Along with being a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and homemaker, Mildred was always busy working and serving her friends, church and community. Early on, she was self-employed as a cosmetologist, worked as a secretary for Bohm Grain, and served as Osborne County Magistrate judge. Mildred also served as the Municipal judge for the cities of Osborne and Downs and was the director for the Osborne Housing Authority for many years before retiring in December 2016. She also played the piano and organ at church for over fifty years, enjoyed playing cards with her family and Bridge group ladies, and was an avid Kansas City sports fan, liking to watch both Chiefs football and Royals baseball. But the time she loved the most was when she could spend it with her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Mildred is survived by her son Terry Britt and wife Gail of Atwood; daughters Cheryl Schmale and husband Frank of Garden City, and Jodi Cockerham and husband John of Osborne; daughter-in-law Lisa Megaffin Eisiminger and husband Brad of Hays; sisters Mary Thibault and husband Dean of Manhattan, and Martha Pottberg and husband Dennis Laubhan of Manhattan; twelve grandchildren Katy Tompkins, Abigail (Tompkins) Puckett and husband Chad, Tyler, Wyatt and Lydia Britt, Carly and Jada (Schmale) Gemaehlich and husband Justin, Jamie and Jessa Cockerham, Kade, Max and Trae Megaffin; and two great-grandchildren Hudson and Hank Puckett. She was preceded in death by her parents Kenneth and Helen Pottberg, husbands Alvin Britt and Scott Megaffin, and son Rex Megaffin. Mildred was a woman of strong faith, abiding hope, and deep love. She gave us a daily example of trusting in God and taking care of one another. Her legacy will live on for generations to come because she showed us that truly, “The greatest of these is love.” A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 am on Friday, November 17, 2017 at Faith Lutheran Church in Osborne. Inurnment will follow in Osborne City Cemetery. There will be no visitation.
