Melvin Everett Johnson

Melvin E. Johnson passed away Wednesday, February 06, 2013 in the Sheridan County Health Complex at Hoxie at the age of 94. Melvin Everett Johnson was born October 3, 1918 to Orville A. and Alice (Chamberlain) Johnson at Brewster, Nebraska. Melvin was the second oldest of six children. His family moved to a farm northwest of Hoxie in 1919. Melvin attended Consolidated #2 rural school and graduated from Selden High School with the class of 1936. Melvin was united in marriage to Liona Ann Watkins on September 8, 1939. They were blessed with five children Darryll, Barbara, Richard, Roger and Bob. Melvin was a passionate wheat farmer. He and Liona spent many great years on the farm until her passing on December 28, 1975. He continued to farm, eventually turning things over to Roger. After retiring he still made time to help out — until it was time for coffee with his friends. Melvin enjoyed hunting, fishing, photography and especially loved music; he treasured time spent with his grandchildren and always had a clever joke to tell. Melvin was a firm, loving, forgiving and caring father and friend. Melvin was a member of the Presbyterian Church, Hoxie Masonic Lodge, Scottish Rite, Isis Shrine and National Rifle Association. Survivors include his children; Darryll and wife Cherry of Bellevue, WA, Barbara Johnston of Tulsa, OK, Richard and wife Diane of Pavillion, WY, Roger and wife Ronda of Hoxie, KS and Bob and wife Marcia of Maple Hills, KS; fifteen grandchildren and twenty one great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. Melvin was preceded in death by his wife, Liona; parents, Orville and Alice; two brothers, Kenneth and Cecil Johnson; and three sisters, Marcille Baker, Evelyn Jo Jacob, and Fern Johnson. Melvin showed character in his devotion to his family and friends. He was always there for us with his soothing nature and heartwarming smile. Melvin brightened our lives. He will be missed.
