Mary Elizabeth (Neal) Karnes

Mary Elizabeth (Neal) Karnes passed away Friday, May 27, 2016, at the Ness County Long Term Care at the age of 80. She was born August 29, 1935, in Sheridan County, Kansas to Charles English and Nellie Anna (Shea) Neal. Mary attended grade and high school in Hoxie, Kansas graduating with the class of 1953. Mary worked at the Sheridan County Health Complex Long Term Care as a Nurse’s Aide, and for a short while, as a cook at the Hoxie Grade School. From the Grade School, she went to work at the Sheridan County Health Complex in the Food Service Department. Mary received her Certificate of Completion for the Food Service Supervisor’s Course from The University of North Dakota in January 1980 and became the Dietary Manager working for Sheridan County Health Complex until her retirement. Mary married Arthur “Art” Ray Karnes Jr. on January 17, 1954, at the Hoxie United Methodist Church. Art and Mary had four children Raymond, Rhonda, Ronald, and Robert. Mary loved life. She was a life-long member of the Hoxie United Methodist Church. She taught Sunday and Bible School, was a member of the church choir and United Methodist Women. Mary was a member of the Hoxie American Legion Auxiliary. She served as a Den Mother for Cub Scouts and as a Girl Scout Leader. She was a wonderful cook and loved to bake. One of Mary’s favorite times of the year was making cookies for the Methodist Church Cookie Walk. She greatly enjoyed her volunteer time at the DSNWK and her cooking and baking projects there. Her garden and flowers were very important to her. She liked working in her yard, quilting and crocheting, and laughing. She loved to sing and was a long time member of the M & M’s, a local singing group. Mary was a very creative person. She taught her children how to laugh and the importance of laughter. Mary’s family was very important to her. Of all her hobbies, her favorite was her grandchildren. Mary is survived by her daughter, Rhonda Heim (John) of Ness City, Kansas; sons, Raymond Karnes (Vicki) of Colorado Springs, Colorado, Ronald Karnes (Helaine) of Haysville, Kansas, and Robert Karnes of Kansas City, Missouri; brother, Varlan E. Neal (Catherine) of Oberlin, Kansas; nine grandchildren and fourteen great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, Charles English and Nellie Anna Neal; her husband, Arthur Ray Karnes Jr.; brothers, Charles ‘Allen’ Neal, James Edward Neal, William Dean Neal; and sister, Ruby Anna Holmes. A Funeral Service will be held Thursday, June 2, 2016, at the Hoxie United Methodist Church, at 2:00 P.M. Burial will be in the Hoxie City Cemetery following the service. Visitation will be Wednesday, June 1, 2016, from 10:00 A.M. until 8:00 P.M., family will receive friends from 5:30 P.M. until 7:00 P.M. all at the Mickey-Leopold Funeral Home. Memorials are suggested to the Hoxie United Methodist Church or Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice, Wichita, Kansas and may be sent in care of Mickey-Leopold Funeral Home, P.O. She taught them all to enjoy their lives and laugh with joy and gladness. Her kind spirit and gentle touch will always be missed but remembered and cherished with love.
