Marjorie “Marj” Kathrine Hilburn passed away Thursday, April 10, 2014, at the Sheridan County Health Complex in Hoxie, Kansas at the age of 94. She was born September 5, 1919 to Benjamin Valentine and Nellie (Rogers) Richards in rural Sheridan County Kansas. Marj attended school in Hoxie and graduated from Sheridan Community High School with the class of 1937. She taught in a rural one room school house, in Sheridan County, for a year, and then she married Cleo Kenneth Morgan on August 19, 1937. They were blessed with three children, Dolores, Bill, and Carol. Cleo preceded her in death on November 2, 1948. She was later married to Jimmie Hilburn on May 13, 1951. Marj was a hard working woman with a mind of her own. After Cleo’s death, Marj and her children moved to Hoxie, and she worked for Dr. Charles Montgomery and then, Dr. Percival. She started working in the Sheridan County Court House. She served four years as Clerk of the District Court and many more years as the Clerk of Sheridan County. She retired in 1981. Marj loved to fish, camp, and cook for her family. She was especially famous for her pumpkin pie and homemade noodles. In their younger years, Marj and Jim loved to kick up their heels on the square dance floor. Marj enjoyed crocheting and gave away many afghans to family and friends. Playing cards and being in a Card Party Club was something she always looked forward to doing. In addition, she loved to watch football games and kept a personal stat book on all of the teams. Everything that Marj did was for her family. Whether working or playing, cooking or cleaning, one thing was for certain, she loved her husband, children and grandchildren without reservation. They truly were the love of her life and there was nothing she wouldn’t do for them. Equal in depth, was Marj’s love for her Lord. Church life was very important to her and she was a faithful member all of her life. Along with serving as Church Treasurer for quite a while, Marj hosted a Bible Study in her home that lasted for 40 years. Devotions, prayer, and scripture, were a vital part of her everyday life. Marj is survived by her husband, Jim of the home; son, Bill Morgan and wife Ruth of Potter, NE; daughter, Carol Sewell and husband Leonard of Hoxie, KS; sisters, Margaret “Peggy” Allen of Hoxie, KS and Juanita Andregg of Hoxie, Ks.; thirteen grandchildren, twenty-six great-grandchildren; and seventeen great-great-grandchildren. Marj was preceded in death by her parents, Benjamin and Nellie Richards; husband, Cleo Morgan; daughter, Dolores Kjellberg, and grandson, Dante Walker. By her example, Marj taught us all how to love God and love one another in real and tangible ways. She was most happy when she was caring for others. She will be greatly missed, but her love and influence will live forever in our hearts and in our hands, as we seek to love and serve one another, through the legacy she leaves for us.
