Louis J. Hamel

Louis Joseph Hamel, age 90, died May 30, 2010, in Hurricane, UT. He was born August 19, 1919 in Damar, KS to Alex and Elsie Thibault Hamel. He married Ferne Elaine Martin in 1950 in Hays, Kansas. Louis lived all of his childhood in Kansas. He was drafted and served honorably in World War II from 1942 to 1945. He received a Purple Heart and a Good Conduct Medal. He and Ferne later moved to Las Vegas, NV in 1961 where Louis worked at the test site for many years. They retired to Washington, UT in 1983 where they could enjoy seeing their grandchildren grow up. Louis enjoyed working on cars and could fix anything. He also enjoyed growing a beautiful garden. We are all thankful for the wonderful things we learned from Dad and Grandpa! He is survived by one daughter: Rebeka Hamel Kemp of Hurricane, UT; grandchildren Lara (Justin) Beene of Murray, UT, Sara (Richard) Hirschi of Hurricane, UT, and Amelia Barrick of St. George, UT; 9 great-grandchildren; 2 brothers; 2 sisters; as well as many extended relatives. He was preceded in death by his wife: Ferne Elaine Martin; parents Alex and Elsie; 11 brothers and sisters; and one daughter, Nancy Colleen Hamel. Graveside service will be held at the Plainville Cemetery on July 31st at 10 a.m. Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association and may be sent in care of the funeral chapel.
