Loren D. Schrock

June 9, 1913 — November 14, 2016

Loren D. Schrock passed away, Monday, November 14, 2016 at the Good Samaritan Society in Oberlin, Kansas at the age of 103. He was born on June 9, 1913 in Selden, Kansas, the oldest of seven children, to the late Harley and Nancy “Nannie” (Vaughn) Schrock. He grew up on the family farm and attended country school before graduating from Selden High School with the Class of 1931. After falling short of the minimum weight requirement for the US Navy, he returned home to marry the pretty young lady he had met in Selden, Marian Bishop. They were united in marriage on December 25, 1932 by the Methodist pastor in Selden, and began their family by renting a small house for $5.00 per month. They were blessed with three children, two sons and a daughter, and celebrated 78 years together. During the course of his life, Loren was a busy man who never lacked for work, or things to keep himself, and others, entertained. Before and after moving to Hoxie, Kansas in 1974, he was a welder, inventor, musician, farmer, mechanic, truck driver, mail carrier, gas-truck delivery man, and even worked on hydraulic jacks on the Beech Aircraft assembly line in Salina, Kansas. Two of his greatest accomplishments were digging a 32-foot cistern by hand for a farmer, Orland Hanshaw, and building a loader from scratch. Always a lover of music, his father gave him his first harmonica when he was three years old, and he taught himself how to play. Later he learned to play the Jew’s harp, accordion, violin and even the spoons. People enjoyed hearing him while his daughter Cheryl often accompanied on piano. Upon retirement, he took to heart the old adage, “You’ll die if you don’t keep busy.” He spent hours making airplanes from small juice cans, kites, windmills and whirly-wind yard ornaments. Known as the “Kite Man” he made and sold Styrofoam kites, which kept him and Marian busy during the 21 winters they spent in Weslaco, Texas. Loren is survived by his daughter Cheryl Miller and husband Jerry of Oberlin; son Keith and wife Vickie of Topeka; sister, Jennie Smith of Hoxie; nine grandchildren; eighteen great-grandchildren; and 23 great-great- grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents Harley and Nannie Schrock; wife Marian Schrock; son Ronald Schrock. brothers Elden Schrock, and Mirl Schrock; sisters Edith Gilliland, Lorraine Meriweather, and Mary Caywood. Funeral services will be held at 2:00pm on Saturday, November 19, 2016 at the Christian Fellowship Church in Hoxie. Burial will follow in the Hoxie City Cemetery. Visitation will be from 12:00-8:00pm on Friday and 10:00am-12:00pm on Saturday at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to the Sheridan County Community Foundation and may be sent in care of Mickey-Leopold Funeral Home, PO Box 987 ,Hoxie, Kansas 67740. On-line condolences may be left at www.mickeyleopoldfuneral.com Loren assisted with memorial services for residents at the nursing home and always closed each service by saying, “God be with you till we meet again.” For over a century, he lived life to the fullest, always willing to share his many talents with family, friends, and neighbors alike. The greatest love of his life was his family and helping to bring joy and happiness to others. Though we are sad to see him go for now, our hearts rejoice as we say to him, “Loren, God be with you till we meet again.”
