Lee Smith

Lester “Lee” Smith passed away on March 22, 2021 in Codell, KS at the age of 106. He was born on October 2, 1914 to William A. and Percie (Peirson) Smith in Rural Codell, KS. Lee and Lennicejean Lynch were married by the District Judge in Stockton, KS. They were blessed with 7 children: Marcene, Geneva, Gavon, Myrna, Verna, Jana, and Trisha. Lee lived in Codell his entire life and graduated from Codell High School with the class of 1932. He was a USD 270 bus driver, contracting his own buses, for 55 years until retiring in 1995. He continued helping his son and many farmers with harvest until 2001. Lee was also a mechanic and a great welder. He loved to tinker, fly his Euro Coupe plane, and loved his motorcycles. He would take his children on rides and always ask them if they wanted to go slow, medium, or speedium! He was a member of the KS PTA. Lee was a hardworking, loving, and dedicated family man. He loved what he did and did what he loved. Although he will be greatly missed, his life, his love, and his legacy will live on in the hearts of his family and friends. Lee is survived by six children, Geneva (Dennis) Scott of Lubbock, TX, Gavon (Ann) Smith of Newton, KS, Myrna (Jim) McClellan of Liberal, KS, Verna Smith of Wichita, KS, Jana (Jim) Myers of Goodland, KS, and Trisha (David) Koel of Plainville, KS; 16 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren plus one on the way; and two great-great-grandchildren on the way and many nieces, nephews, and extended family. He is preceded in death by his parents, William and Percie Smith; wife, Lennice (Lynch) Smith; daughter, Marcene (Delwin) Locke; a stillborn infant son; brothers, Howard (Wilma), Arthur (Leona), and Roy “Dutch” (Melba) Smith; sisters, Ellen (Howard) Hockett, Neva (Arden) Hoskins, and Ruby (Williard) Zuehlke; one stillborn infant grandson, Aaron Smith; and grandson, Nick Cox. A funeral service will be held on Friday, March 26, 2021, at 10:00 AM at the Codell Community Church in Codell, KS. Burial will follow at the Shiloh Cemetery. Visitation will be on Thursday 3:00 PM until 8:00 PM at the funeral home in Plainville. Memorials are suggested to Rooks County Township 12 and may be sent in care of Plumer-Overlease Funeral Home, 320 SW 2nd St, Plainville, KS 67663.
