Carolyn Kay Hinger, better known as Kay to her friends and family, passed away Tuesday, February 25, 2014 at Hays Medical Center in Hays, Kansas at the age of 70. She was born November 13, 1943 to Thomas and Mary Lorine (Hester) Church in Iola, Kansas. Kay graduated from Wella High School with the Class of 1960 and then attended beauty school. On March 27, 1961 she married Jerry Hinger in Lone Elm, Kansas. To this union were born two sons, Scott and Sean. Kay was passionate about many things. She loved painting Santa’s, landscapes and any other subject that caught her interest. She was an avid reader, enjoyed cooking, and was indeed the “Best Cook in the County.” But above all, Kay loved her friends and family, especially her grandchildren. They truly were the light of her life. Kay is survived by her two sons, Scott Hinger of Natoma, and Sean Hinger and wife Michele of Plainville; two brothers, Fred Church and wife Vicky of Iola, and Steve Church and wife Ginger of Kenyon, MN; sister Jean Smith of Carlisle, PA; and two grandchildren, Zachary and Jenna Hinger. She was preceded in death by her parents Thomas and Mary Lorine, and her husband Jerry. Kay was greatly loved and will be greatly missed. Her life, her love, and her legacy will live on in everyone who knew her. For Kay, meals didn’t stop at the kitchen table, because they were expressions of her love. Always full of laughter, stories of days gone by, and favorite homemade recipes, Kay was always loving, encouraging, and raising up a strong and healthy family, one great meal at a time.
