Karl Joseph Alsheimer, 61, of Fredericksburg, VA passed away Thursday, September 18, 2014, at Mary Washington Hospital. A native of Bethesda, MD, he studied Electrical Engineering at Kansas State University before enlisting in the U.S. Army. He served nine years of active duty in the U.S. and overseas, before his discharge in 1980 as a Staff Sergeant. In Germany he achieved the rank of Tank Commander, and also studied Business Science at the University of Maryland. In 1977, while stationed at Fort Riley, Kansas, he married Joelle McCall of Stockton. In 1981, he joined Westat, Inc. Rockville, MD, working initially as a Microcomputer Coordinator and later as a Network Manager. In 1992, he began work as a Network Systems Engineer for a government contractor serving local and federal governments. In the ensuing 22 years, he worked as a Principal Network Engineer and Senior Systems Analyst for a series of government contractors supporting Dept. of Defense projects. Most recently he worked as a Senior Systems Administrator for Chenega Federal Systems, Alexandria, VA. Survivors include his wife, Joelle A. Alsheimer of Fredericksburg; mother Bernice Alsheimer of Silver Spring, MD; daughter Karin Alsheimer of Fredericksburg; brother Kurt Alsheimer of Silver Spring, MD; and sisters Antoinette Whitmeyer of Bethesda, MD, Michele Alsheimer of Rockville, MD, and Olga A. Lewis of Mountain View, CA. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place at St. Thomas Church in Stockton, KS, on Friday, October 3 at 10:30 a.m. Burial will follow at St. Thomas Cemetery.
