Joseph A. (Joe) Malin died Wednesday, November 3, 2010 at the Rooks County Health Center in Plainville. He was born November 22, 1928, to Paul and Mary (Rempe) Malin in Plainville. Joe was a lifetime farmer and master gardener who generously shared his produce with all. He was a self-taught artist, and his creative welded art and furniture are treasured by family and friends. He also was an avid reader and loved his Kansas Jayhawks. While dedicating his life to support his family, he nonetheless exhibited a unique spirit of adventure and inquisitiveness. Most of all he cherished being surrounded by his large and noisy family. He was a strong, talented, intelligent, and ethical man who had a positive impact on his western Kansas community, in his church, and on his family. He will be missed. Joe graduated from Plainville High School and was a lifetime member of Sacred Heart Church, having served on the parish council, the Sacred Heart School board and was a member and former Grand Knight of the Knights of Columbus. He was proud to serve on the Plainville Library Board from 1997 until 2006. On August 22, 1951 he married Rita Hogan and was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather. He is survived by his wife of the home; sons, Jared, Ottawa, Steve and wife Emily, Baldwin, Mike and wife Rechelle, Wamego, Dave and wife Karrabi, Grapevine, TX; daughters, Lori Davidson and husband Dennis, Russell, Lois Malin, Garden City, Barbara Sheffer and husband Jason, Baxter Springs, and Christi Burnam and husband JJ, Tulsa, OK. He is also survived by 19 grandchildren, Anne Davidson Gnojek and husband Dave, Jenny Davidson and husband Nick Maciaszek, and Michael Davidson, all of Lawrence; Emily and Joe Malin of Ottawa; Grace and Joy Malin, Baxter Springs; Calder, Ethan, Drew and Jack Malin of Wamego; Octavia, Isabel and Noah Malin of Grapevine Texas; Jake and Max Sheffer of Baxter Springs; and Riley, Rita, and Roxanne Burnam of Tulsa OK; a great granddaughter, Isla Gnojek, of Lawrence; and a sister, Eleanor Gerhardt, of Mira Loma, CA. He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Margaret Walker, and his eldest son Max Malin. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Monday, November 8, 2010 at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Plainville with Father Galen Long as Celebrant. Visitation will be from 5-8 Saturday, 9:00 a.m. – 5:30 p.m. Sunday with a Ladies Guild Rosary at 3:00 p.m. at the Moore-Overlease Funeral Chapel. A Parish Vigil Service will be 7:00 p.m. Sunday evening followed by a Knights of Columbus Rosary at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Burial will be in the Sacred Heart Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Sacred Heart Catholic Church Memorial Fund or to the Plainville Public Library and may be sent in care of the Moore-Overlease Funeral Chapel, 409 S.
