John E. McCune was born October 13, 1966 to Sam and Mary Ruth (Rempe) McCune, three minutes older than his fraternal twin brother Joe. He passed away Wednesday, June 13, 2012 in Rooks County, Kansas near Plainville at the age of 45. John was a lifetime resident of Plainville, attending Sacred Heart Grade School and graduating in 1985 from Plainville High School. He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Plainville. After high school graduation, he joined the United States Army. Following training in South Carolina and Georgia, he was stationed at Fort Bragg, North Carolina as a paratrooper with the prestigious 82nd Airborne Division from November 1986 to November 1988. He was honorably discharged from the Army and then served in the National Guard until 1993. He was an excellent firearms marksman. He was a member of the 82nd Airborne Division Association, and supported the Wounded Warrior Project, which helps wounded veterans returning from war. John loved nature. He was an enthusiastic hunter and fisherman and fished just about every farm pond from Plainville to Russell that contained fish. He loved American war history and enjoyed reading books and viewing movies about various conflicts. He also loved working with scrap metal, and created a shop in the barn at his farm, where he would create different pieces of art. He worked various oilfield jobs including as a welder, roustabout, floor hand and most recently was working for Shields Drilling on oil drilling rigs. For nearly two decades, John lived on the farmstead three miles east of Plainville where he grew up. The farm had been acquired when John was a boy by his father and mother, Sam and Mary Ruth, from John’s great uncle, the late Martin Rempe. John is survived by six siblings – Greg McCune and wife Pat of Buffalo Grove, Illinois; Kathy (McCune) Melton and husband Greg Stewart of Rocky Point, North Carolina; Susan (McCune) Roberts and husband Alan of Arkadelphia, Arkansas; Deb (McCune) Chew and husband Dwayne of Plainville; Bill and Karen McCune of Plainville; and Joe and Lanette McCune of Plainville. He is also survived by 17 nieces and nephews – Daniel Melton of San Francisco, California; Clinton Melton of Wichita; Jessi Melton and Mary Strickler of Overland Park; Eric and Sarah McCune of Buffalo Grove, Illinois; Matt McCune of Abilene; Justin, Colt, Danelle, Kelcee, Izac McCune of Plainville; Dustin Chew of Plainville; Stephanie Roberts of Bentonville, Arkansas; Jennifer Roberts of Fayetteville, Arkansas; Erika Roberts of Jonesboro, Arkansas Arkansas; and Holly Chew of Lenexa. He had six grand nieces and nephews -- Taylor Gaither and Colton Strickler of Overland Park, Samuel and Ayden McCune of Plainville; and Sebastian and Seth Melton of Wichita. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Monday, June 18, 2012 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Plainville with Father Joshua Werth celebrating. Private inurnment services will follow at a later date. Visitation will be Sunday, from 9:00 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. at the funeral home and from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at the church with family receiving friends from 6:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. A Parish Vigil and Rosary will be at 7:00 p.m. at the church. Memorials are suggested to the John McCune memorial fund to be designated at a later date or the Wounded Warrior Project and may be sent in care of Moore-Overlease Funeral Chapel, 409 S.
