Irwin “LeRoy” Shaw, Jr. passed away Tuesday, March 15, 2016, at the Sheridan County Health Complex, in Hoxie, Kansas at the age of 94. He was born July 8, 1921 to Irwin LeRoy Shaw, Sr. and Elva Beulah (Hanchett) Shaw in Hoxie. He grew up and attended school in Hoxie graduating from Sheridan Community High School with the Class of 1939. He went on to attend Fort Hays State College graduating with a Bachelor’s Degree in Business. He later attended a watch making and jewelry repair school, in Kansas City, Missouri, graduating with a watch making degree. He also served in the United States Army Air Forces working as an Air Transportation Technician. LeRoy married Maxine Cook on October 3, 1948 in Larned, Kansas at the home of her parents. They made their home in Hoxie where they lived and raised their family. In 1949 LeRoy started Shaw Jewelry Store which he continued to own and operate until the time of his death. They lived over the Jewelry Store until their family began to grow and moved to their present home on Trail Avenue. Throughout the years LeRoy had many interests. His top three passions in life were his family, church, and work. Growing up, his parents had a big vegetable garden he helped tend, so he always loved working in the yard and garden even just to relax. He loved giving his children rides on his bicycle, reminding them to hold their feet out, and they remember playing with dad in the yard. He was a member of the Hoxie United Methodist Church, a member the of the church choir for many years, and United Methodist Men. He was a member of the Hoxie Masonic Lodge and recently received his sixty-five year membership plaque. LeRoy is survived by his daughters, Roberta Shipley (Gary) of Hoxie, Kansas, Marilyn Leiker (Rick) of Hoxie, Kansas, and Carolyn DeMoss (Jim) of Overland Park, Kansas; sons, Carl Shaw (Katie) of Edgemont, South Dakota and Mike Shaw (Patti) of Hoxie, Kansas; eight grandchildren; twelve great-grandchildren and a sister, Helen Shaw of Hoxie, Kansas. He was preceded in death by his parents Irwin and Beulah Shaw and his wife, Maxine. A Memorial Service will be held on Tuesday, March 22, 2016, at the Hoxie United Methodist Church, Hoxie, Kansas, at 10:30 A.M. Inurnment will follow the service in the Hoxie City Cemetery. Visitation will be Monday, March 21, 2016, from 1:00 P.M. to 7:30 P.M. with family receiving friends from 5:30 P.M. to 7:00 P.M., at the Mickey-Leopold Funeral Home. Memorials are suggested to the Hoxie United Methodist Church or the Sheridan County Benefit Walk Foundation, and may be sent in care of Mickey-Leopold Funeral Home, PO Box 987, Hoxie, Kansas 67740. Never one to shirk responsibility or hard work, he lived a life of faith, hope, and love by taking care of his family, community, and neighbors with tireless energy.
