Remembering ~ Howard Dale Harwerth passed away Thursday, December 18th, 2014 at the Sheridan County Health Complex in Hoxie, Kansas at the age of 73. He was born July 9th, 1941 to Ben and Mildred (Heaton) Harwerth in Ludell, Kansas. He grew up in Atwood, Kansas graduating from Atwood High School. He attended Kansas Weslyan University in Salina, Kansas where he graduated with a teaching degree with emphasis in History. While at Kansas Wesleyan Howard met and married Georgia Rogers in June of 1963. They began their life together in Sabetha, Kansas where he was a teacher and coach. They moved to Hoxie in 1967 where he taught in the high school and coached for 7 years. He began working on the Don James farm during the summer and decided to make it a full time job with John Hill Farms in 1973 where he worked until retirement. Howard was very active in the community through the Lions Club and the local Elks. Education was very important to Howard and while he was no longer educating students in the classroom, he continued to better the education of children in Hoxie, Kansas. He did so by serving on the school board for several years, most recently as the Board President. Howard was an avid supporter of Hoxie Indian athletics. He attended many of the games and when he was not able to attend due to heath issues, he watched from home. For many years he enjoyed being the voice of the Hoxie Indians at basketball games and wrestling matches. Howard was a life long member of the Hoxie United Methodist Church and enjoyed supporting the church in many ways. Currently He was serving as a Lay Leader, worship team member, and on the scholarship committee . He is survived by his wife of 52 years-Georgia, son, David of Strasburg, Colorado and daughter, Dala Henry and husband David of Brian Texas; granddaughter, Addie Henry; brothers, Ron Harwerth and wife Betty of Houston, Texas and Bernard Harwerth and wife Delores of Kansas City, Missouri; sister, Burness Shramek and husband Johnny of Aurora, Colorado; brother-in-law, Galen Rogers and wife Dianne of Newton; 3 nieces and 8 nephews. Howard is preceded in death by his parents, Ben and Mildred Harwerth and two nephews. Cemetery: There will be a private family inurnment. Reception: Hoxie United Methodist Church
