Howard Anthony Garvert

Howard Anthony Garvert, 88, of Plainville, Kansas, passed away on August 24, 2026, at Hays Medical Center in Hays, Kansas surrounded by his family. He was born on November 12, 1937, in Plainville to Adam and Susan (Adam) Garvert. On June 10, 1961, he was united in marriage to Janice M. Kuhn at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Plainville. Together, they were blessed with three children: Sharon, Jolene, and John.

Howard grew up in Plainville and graduated from Plainville High School in 1955. A farmer at heart, he spent much of his life working the land and providing for his family. Later in life he transitioned from farming to rural mail carrier for the Plainville Post Office. After selling the farm, Howard and Jan moved to town. When Jan became ill, he retired early to devote his time to care for her.

Faith and family were at the center of Howard’s life. He was a devoted member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 4th Degree Member and a past Grand Knight of the Knights of Columbus Council 1857. His faith was not only something he practiced, but something he shared with others. He enjoyed making and repairing rosaries, a quiet ministry that reflected his devotion and willingness to serve.

Howard took great pride in his family and especially enjoyed following the many activities and accomplishments of his children and grandchildren. Whether attending an event, keeping up with what they were doing, or simply spending time together, being involved in their lives brought him great joy.

Howard is survived by his children, Sharon (Richard) Williams of Plainville, Jolene Lorg of Wichita, KS and John (Michele) Garvert of Plainville; sister, Madlyn Rietcheck of Manhattan, KS; nine grandchildren, Ryan (Jessie) Williams, Jason (Elise) Williams, Gabriele Lorg, Annalise Lorg, Abigail Lorg, Craig (Lynnae) Garvert, Kayla (Remington) Creed, Michael Garvert, and Bryan Garvert; and four great-grandchildren, Raegan Williams, Easton Williams, Lawson Williams, and Willow Williams.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Adam and Susan Garvert; wife, Janice Garvert; brother, Wilfred Garvert; sisters, Rosalie Garvert, Evelyn Werth and Theresa Scott; and grandson, Steven Lorg.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, August 28, 2026, at 10:30 AM at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Plainville. Burial will follow at the church cemetery. Visitation will be held on Thursday 6:00-8:00 PM with a Vigil and Rosary Service at 7:00 PM all at the church.

Memorials are suggested to Sacred Heart Catholic Church or Sacred Heart Catholic School and may be sent to Plumer-Overlease Funeral Home, 320 SW 2nd St, Plainville, KS 67663.

Our ability to give much to the world in which we live comes from being raised in a family where much has been given.

The family would like to thank all those who loved and cared for Howard. He was a man of great faith and an obedient servant of God.
