Harley G. Mcgough

April 11, 1932 — July 30, 2013

Harley Gray McGough passed away Tuesday, July 30, 2013 at Redbud Village in Plainville, Kansas at the age of 81. Harley was born in El Dorado, Arkansas on April 11, 1932 to Sid and Nell (Alphin) McGough. Harley graduated from Xenia High School in Xenia, Illinois and joined the United States Navy in December of 1950 serving aboard the USS Shelton and stationed in Long Beach, California where he was honorably discharged in October of 1954. Harley married Verlie Friesen on December 10, 1955 at the First Southern Baptist Church in Plainville. Together they had three children, Doug, Dave, and Dawn. Harley worked until retirement as an oilfield chemical salesman. His customers, and all who came to know him, truly loved him. He was the funniest guy in the world. Never without a joke or story to tell and always adding humor to the deep love that he felt for his family and friends. Harley was a huge K.U. fan and loved to talk K.U. Basketball with anyone who wanted to hear about it and even those who didn't. Rock Chalk Jayhawk! Harley was a faithful member of the First Southern Baptist Church in Plainville where he served as Deacon for many years. Harley was preceded in death by his parents, Sid and Nell McGough; and brother, Sid McGough, Jr. Left to cherish his memory include his loving wife of 57 years, Verlie of the home; sons, Doug McGough and wife Peggy of Overland Park and Dave McGough and wife Tonya of Topeka; daughter, Dawn Rempe and husband Tony of Cartersville, Georgia; seven grandchildren, Julie Ruff & husband Colin, Cindy Scott & husband Luke, Tyler McGough, Sadie & Cameron McGough and Lance & Logan Rempe; five great-grandchildren, Elodie, Sylvie and Felicity Ruff, and Kinley & Maylie Scott. The fun, the laughter and the joy that we all shared with Harley will never be forgotten, for he taught us: To have a sense of humor, to see the grace of God in a joke, To get pleasure out of life, and pass it on to other folk.
