Grace Lavern Turnbull passed away Saturday, November 17, 2012 at the Solomon Valley Manor in Stockton at 100 years of age. She was born September 9, 1912 to Berten D. and Sophia (Trimble) Odle. Grace attended Locust Grove County School in Phillips County. She was united in marriage to Earl Turnbull April 27, 1930. She and Earl lived on a farm in Rooks County and later moved to a farm in Phillips County where she lived until Earl passed away in November of 1968. She then moved to Stockton in 1970 where she lived until moving to Solomon Valley Manor in March of 2008. Grace was a member of the Stockton United Methodist Church, VFW Auxiliary and EHU. After moving to Stockton she worked at Bates’ Clothing Store; then Grace enjoyed working as a baker and cook at the Stockton School cafeteria for fifteen years. Grace enjoyed everything she did. She was always there to help her husband, Earl, on the farm. Grace always planted a big vegetable garden and many beautiful flowers. She was a great cook and everyone enjoyed her crispy fried chicken, homemade bread, rolls, jelly and delicious pies. She taught her grandchildren and great-grandchildren how to bake bread and rolls. Grace won many awards for her canning, breads and rolls including winning grand champion several times at the Rooks County Free Fair for her secret-recipe raisin pie. Grace also enjoyed sewing, quilting, making crocheted hangars, reading, playing games and cards, fishing, square dancing, bowling, golf and traveling. Left to cherish Grace’s memory are her son Delaine “Bull” Turnbull and wife Wilma of Stockton; daughter Bonnie Denson and husband Joe of Emporia; six grandchildren, Cindy Hageman (John), Cheryl Dunning (Steve), Jan Hageman (Blaine), Jill Turnbull, Carla Fessler (Wayne) and Steve Denson; thirteen great-grandchildren, Lindsey Hageman, Kristen Hageman, Sarah Hageman, Caroline Dunning, Annie Pitts (Bobby), Hunter Dunning, Barton Hageman, Grace Hageman, Hadley Hageman, Hannah Hageman, Jacob Turnbull Gallegos, Gretchen Gragg (Todd) and Ashley Kopecky; two great-great-grandchildren, Ava Grace Kopecky and Everyn Hageman; sister Nellie Barth of Topeka; and many nieces and nephews. Preceding Grace in death are her husband Earl; infant daughter Yvonne; sisters Lula Young, Hazel Miller and Alberta Stone; and brothers Earl Odle, Gale Odle and Lee Odle. Grace’s death is the final test that her mission on earth is complete and her presence strengthened the lives of family and friends. The gift of memories that surrounded Grace’s life will bring comfort, joy and laughter to those friends and family left behind. Treasure the memories always.
