Gary Lynn Davis

February 19, 1947 — August 1, 2017

Gary L. Davis passed away at his home in rural Sheridan County at the age of 70. He was born on February 19, 1947, in Phillips, Texas to the late Gerald L. and E. Ruth (Scifres) Davis. Growing up, one of Gary’s passions was chemical engineering, as Phillips was home to the Phillips Petroleum Company Refinery, one of the world’s largest crude oil processing centers. His other great passion was farming. During his school years he spent every summer on the farm belonging to his grandparents, Arch and Irene Davis, in Sheridan County, helping with the wheat harvest. He attended school in Phillips, Texas graduating from Phillips High School in 1965. He attended Texas A & M where he was a proud member of the Aggie Corps of Cadets. He then transferred to the University of Michigan to continue studying Chemical Engineering. Before graduating from college, he enlisted in the United States Army during the Viet Nam era. He was stationed at Fort Ord, California. When Gary was honorably discharged from the army, he went to work in Palmdale, California as a building inspector. He then formed his own company General Mining. His business endeavor was short lived as his Uncle Murray Davis called him and asked him to come help him farm. Gary had always loved northwest Kansas and the farm. He jumped at the chance to return to Sheridan County. He farmed the land and raised cattle until his death. Gary was an avid hunter and gun collector. Gary is survived by his sister Carol Arce, two nieces and their spouses, Lyndsey and Jarrett Grundman, Lauren and Eric Riojas, one great-niece, and two great nephews, all of Friendswood, Texas. He was preceded in death by his parents Gerald L. and E. Ruth Davis and a brother, Dick Davis. There will be no visitation and a private burial will take place.
