Floyd Victor "Vic" Karnes

March 5, 1936 — July 22, 2014

Floyd Victor “Vic” Karnes, passed away Tuesday, July 22, 2014 in the Sheridan County Health Complex at the age of 78. He was born March 5, 1936 in Bowcreek Township of Sheridan County, Kansas to Floyd and Nell (Schropp) Karnes. He grew up in the Tasco area on the original Schropp homestead. He completed grade school at Tasco and graduated from Sheridan Community High School with the Class of 1954. He went on to attend Kansas State University for a year before returning to work the family farm. On August 12, 1956, Vic married Ardith Kemper, the love of his life, at the First Presbyterian Church in Hoxie, Kansas. To this union were born three children, Janelle, Jill, and Jon. They made their home northeast of Tasco and later moved to the original Schropp homestead in 1961. There, he farmed with his father until his passing in 1975. Vic continued farming and raising cattle until 1991. Shortly thereafter, he began to sell Moorman’s Feed, and continued until his retirement. Vic and Ardith continued to live on the family farm until January 2012, when they moved to Hoxie. Vic was a member and elder of the First Presbyterian Church. He served on the USD 412 School Board for many years, and drove the Hoxie Community School Bus for over 25 years. Some of Vic’s many interests were bowling, painting, playing cards, fishing, and enjoying time with Ardith in the RV. Vic is survived by his wife, Ardith of the home; two daughters, Janelle Cooper and husband Lee of Hoxie, Jill Heskett and husband Dr. David Heskett of Hoxie; son Jon Karnes and wife Dori of Derby; and two sisters, Judith Weeks and Joyce Peter, both of Hoxie. Also left behind with special memories of their grandpa are his seven grandchildren; Amy (Cooper) Kane and husband Ty of Wichita, Curt Cooper and wife Julia of Hoxie, Joshua Heskett of Wichita, Jordon Heskett of Los Angeles, CA, Victor Karnes and fiancé Megan McNeill of Wichita, Kelsi Heskett of Manhattan, and Joseph Karnes of Derby. Special times were had in the last five years with great grandchildren Avery, Levi, and Evie Kane, and Inara and Jemma Cooper. A host of other relatives and many friends will also miss him. He was preceded in death by his parents, Floyd and Nell Karnes. Vic lived daily by the Law of the Harvest: You reap what you sow. Throughout his life he sowed seeds of faith, hard work, integrity, commitment, and love into the lives of his family and friends. In the words of the Psalmist, Vic has now reaped his final harvest, for surely goodness and mercy have followed him all the days of his life, and he shall dwell in the house of the Lord forever.
