Elmer F. Berens, age 92, passed away October 10, 2015, at the Sheridan County Health Complex Long Term Care, in Hoxie. He was born March 31, 1923, at Hyacinth, Kansas in Ellis County, to John and Anna (Kuhn) Berens. He was united in marriage to Agnes Schwarzenberger June 1, 1948, at Collyer, Kansas. He graduated in 1941 from Grainfield High School. He joined the United States Army and served his country during World War II. Elmer has been a member of the American Legion since 1946 and was commander for many years. He served on the boards of Grainfield High School, Wheatland High School and Northwest Kansas Area Vocational Technical School. He managed Little League and American Legion baseball teams. He also officiated football and basketball games. Survivors include his wife, Agnes of the home; daughters, Deborah Wade and husband Alvis of Hoxie, Kansas, Rebecca Brungardt and husband Kevin of Sublette, Kansas, Sarah Miller and husband Fred of Liberal, Kansas, and Deidre Ferguson and husband Bob of Spearman, Texas; son, Greg Berens and wife Michele of Tampa, Kansas; ten grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; three step-great- grandchildren; and a brother, Leo Berens of Colby, Kansas. Elmer was preceded in death by his parents, four sisters, four brothers, and an infant grandson. Elmer was a quiet, caring husband, father, and friend. He was humble of heart and gentle of spirit. He will be missed but his memory will always be with us.
