Edith Aileen Mclaughlin

March 8, 1926 — November 12, 2015

Edith Aileen (Beckley) McLaughlin passed away Thursday, November 12, 2015 at the Redbud Village in Plainville, Kansas at the age of 89. She was born on March 8, 1926 on the Old Gladys Ranch in Phillips County, Kansas as the only girl of ten siblings, to the late James Robert and Mary Elizabeth (Lawyer) Beckley. On September 20, 1942 she was united in marriage to Leroy J. “Cork” McLaughlin in Smith Center, Kansas. They were blessed with three children, Jim, Jeanie, and Rick. To say that Edith was a hardworking woman would be an understatement. As a farm wife, her days began with milking cows, feeding chickens, doing chores, making breakfast, and cleaning the house. In addition, she worked several jobs during her lifetime to help with the family’s income including CNA at Solomon Valley Manor, cleaning homes, Montgomery Ward, the knife factory, Travenol Laboratories, and the drug store. From the time she was a young girl she never stopped loving and working to take care of her family, friends, and neighbors. Edith was a member of the VFW Auxiliary and worked as a Senior Companion. She enjoyed traveling and being with people. Whether playing cards with Cork and their friends or chatting over a cup of coffee, she never passed up an opportunity to visit and spend time with those she loved and cared about. Truly her life was spent caring for others more than herself. Edith is survived by her son Rick McLaughlin and wife Sharon of Zurich; daughter Jeanie Schafer and husband Frank “Buzz” of Littleton, CO; daughter-in-law Mary Ann McLaughlin of Denver, CO; grandchildren Kaylyn Hymen, Lisa Field, Holly Wilson, Dan McLaughlin, Brandon Schafer, Chad McLaughlin, and J.T. McLaughlin; eighteen great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents James Robert and Mary Elizabeth Beckley; husband Leroy “Cork” McLaughlin; brothers Floyd, Wreford, Leo, Irvin, Willard, Willis, Ivan, and Otis Beckley, along with an Infant Brother; son Jim McLaughlin; grandchildren Roy McLaughlin, and Heather Schafer; and great-grandchild Tesla McLaughlin. It is written, “An excellent wife who can find? She is far more precious than jewels. The heart of her husband trusts in her, and he will have no lack of gain. She opens her mouth with wisdom. She looks well to the ways of her household. Her children rise up and call her blessed.” Edith was a daily example of such a wife and mother. The people whom she loved, and loved her in return, have been eternally blessed for generations to come.
