Duane W. Meyer, 86, died Saturday, March 31st in Bartlesville, Oklahoma. Duane was born in Glade, Kansas, on October 24, 1925, the son of Earl Max Meyer and Marion Clara (Cole) Meyer. He attended area schools and graduated in 1944 from Prairie View High School, in Prairie View, Kansas. Duane joined the US Navy that same year and served as Chief Engineer in a patrol and escort convoy along the US eastern coast. He was honorably discharged in 1946, at which time he started working for the Kansas Highway Commission. In 1952 he met Loretta Mae Stephen in Stockton, Kansas, and they were married September 21st of that year. Loretta preceded him in death January 27, 2000. During his 32 year career with the Kansas Highway Commission, Duane and Loretta lived in Norton, Ulysses, and Syracuse, Kansas. After taking an early retirement from the Kansas Highway Commission in 1978, Duane and Loretta bought IN-WE-GO Fishing Resort in Nevis, Minnesota. They operated the resort until 1989 when Duane entered into full time retirement. Duane moved to Bartlesville, Oklahoma, in 2007. Duane coached Little League Baseball and was Assistant Scout Master for Boy Scouts of America while living in Syracuse. He served on the School Board in Nevis, Minnesota, and enjoyed taking the census for Hubbard County, Minnesota, in 1980. He was an accomplished square dancer, a skilled carpenter, and an avid fisherman. He enjoyed reading, studying his family history, playing FreeCell on his computer, and winning a game of bridge, dominoes, or cribbage. Duane is survived by one daughter, Susan Raye Farson and husband Richard of Pekin, Illinois; four sons, Donald Duane Meyer and wife Patsy of Omaha, Nebraska, Mitchell Earl Meyer and wife Jerri of Bartlesville, Oklahoma, Larry Vaughn Meyer and wife Kimberly of Lakin, Kansas, and Basil Rick Meyer and wife Karen of Lakeville, Minnesota; eight grandchildren, Jeremy Meyer and wife Carrie of Tigard, Oregon, Matthew Meyer and wife Jennifer of Round Rock, Texas, Nicholas Meyer and wife Claudette of Alexandria, Virginia, Saeree Meyer and Kyle Honeycutt of Lakin, Kansas, Eric Meyer of Lakin, Kansas, Mae, Emma, and Audrey Meyer of Lakeville, Minnesota; nine great-grandchildren Jordan and Kiera Brink, and Layne Honeycutt of Lakin, Kansas, Izaac and Izabella Meyer of Alexandria, Virginia, Lyra and Brody Meyer of Tigard, Oregon, and Abigail and James Duane Meyer of Round Rock, Texas; two sisters Gwenlyn Gustin of Colorado Springs, Colorado, and Merle Walter of Mitchell, Nebraska; in-laws Lorene and Don Alexander, Lucille Brush, Leroy and Barbara Stephen, Lana and Larry Odle, Leonard Stephen, and Lewis Stephen; and many nieces and nephews. In addition to his wife Loretta, Mr. Meyer was preceded in death by his parents, one brother Ray Dean Meyer, and one sister Mary Woltman, Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, April 5, 2012 at Smith-Moore-Overlease Funeral Home, 723 N 1st Street in Stockton, Kansas with Pastor Les Ellis officiating. Interment will be in the Mt. Vernon Cemetery in rural Stockton with military honors by VFW post Monroe-Taylor-Barnes #8873. Visitation for will be held Wednesday, April 4, 2012, from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. and Thursday, April 5, 2012, from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Memorials are suggested to the donor’s choice and may be sent in care of Smith-Moore-Overlease Funeral Home, 723 N.
