Dr. John Rand Neuenschwander

August 8, 1947 — December 14, 2016

Dr. John Rand Neuenschwander passed away, Wednesday, December 14, 2016 at Hays Medical Center in Hays, Kansas at the age of 69. He was born on August 8, 1947 in St. Louis, the oldest of five children, to Dr. John Rapp Neuenschwander and his late wife, Gloria June (Simpson) Neuenschwander . His family moved to Hoxie, Kansas in 1952 where his father opened a private practice as a Family Practice Physician. Dr. John Rand would later join that same medical practice in 1975 to work alongside his father. During his time in medical school he met Sylvia Ford. June 23, 1973, in Kansas City, Kansas, Dr. John Rand and Sylvia were united in marriage. They were blessed with two daughters, Lori and Cindy. Throughout the course of his life, Dr. John Rand had a thirst for knowledge and a passion for educating, mentoring, and helping others. He graduated from high school in Hoxie, Ks and went on to complete medical school at the University of Kansas. He was a Family Practice Physician in Hoxie, KS for 33 years, providing care for the very community that had raised him and he had grown to love. To say he had hobbies is an understatement. He had an insatiable interest in circuitry, mechanics, electronics, woodworking, gunsmithing, art, animals, and music. When he was not in the office or at the hospital, he could be found in his lab downstairs or in the garage, working with friends and family on their projects or perfecting his EarShot II electronic earmuff circuitry. He was a font of knowledge, had an entertaining witty personality, and a love for his family and friends. Dr. John Rand is survived by his wife Sylvia of the home in Hoxie; daughters, Lori Santona and husband Jorge of Olathe, Kansas and Cindy Neuenschwander and husband Nathan Salyer of Lewisville, Texas; brothers, Jim Neuenschwander and wife CeeAnn Koerperich-Neuenschwander of Overland Park, Kansas and Karl Neuenschwander and wife Mary Lou “Lu” of Hoxie, Kansa; sister, Daren Archer and husband Steve of Raymore, Missouri and Rona Neuenschwander and husband Wague Diakite` of Portland, Oregon. He was preceded in death by his mother Gloria June (Simpson) Neuenschwander. A funeral service will be held Saturday, December 17, 2016, at 10:30 A.M. at Mickey-Leopold Funeral Home, Hoxie, Kansas. Inurnment will be at a later date. Visitation will be held Friday, December 16, 2016 from Noon until 7:00 P.M., with family receiving friends from 5:30 P.M. until 6:30 P.M., at Mickey-Leopold Funeral Home. Memorials are suggested to Sheridan County Health Complex and may be sent in care of Mickey-Leopold Funeral Home, PO Box 987, Hoxie, Kansas 67740. Dr. John Rand had a very full life and had a tremendous impact on so many individuals. He has touched the lives of not only his patients, but his fellow physicians, nursing staff, preceptors, friends, family, and the entire community. He had an amazing heart and always strived to do things the way he knew they needed to be done. Though we are very sad to see him go, we are truly blessed to be able to say we shared in his life.
