Doris Ruth Adams

January 31, 1928 — November 29, 2017

Doris Ruth (Scherer) Adams died on November 29, 2017, at the Sheridan County Health Complex at the age of 89. She was born January 31, 1928, to John Henry and Anna Elisabeth (Scholl) Scherer. Doris grew up in Kansas City, Kansas, and graduated from Rosedale High School in May 1946. After graduation, Doris went to work for a bank in Kansas City, Missouri. Shortly after she met a young sailor who, on his return home from the service, stopped to visit an uncle in Kansas City. Lyman Adams, the young sailor, and Doris quickly fell in love, and on November 7, 1946, the two were united in marriage in Kansas City, Missouri. They celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary on November 7, 2016. Doris left the big city to move with Lyman to Northwest Kansas, and settled on a farm down the road from the family farm where Lyman had been raised. They welcomed their first child, Gloria in 1947, Linda in 1949, who passed away at the age of six months due to illness, Lyman Jr. in 1951, Carl in 1953, and completed their family with the birth of Veva in 1958. Lyman and Doris were active members of the Hoxie United Methodist Church. Doris served on many committees, taught Sunday School and was a faithful member of United Methodist Women. Doris and Lyman raised their children with the importance of being committed to God and church. Doris was very committed to all of her family. She was a wonderful homemaker and a great cook, making many delicious meals for her family and friends. She also enjoyed gardening, sewing, and doing canvas crafts for her children. Her family looked forward each Christmas to getting a special canvas craft item that Doris had made during the year. Doris is survived by son, Lyman Adams Jr. and wife Marie of Hillsboro, Kansas; daughters, Gloria Ruth Mattix of Salida, Colorado, and Veva Elizabeth Ruggles and husband Steve of Winfield, Kansas; Grandchildren, Buel Mattix (Carrie), Lily Jones (JJ), Kyle Adams (Kristy), Kara Bartow (Rich), Kane Adams (Laci), and Peter, Ruth, Timothy, Elizabeth, Jacob, Daniel, and Lydia Ruggles; Great-Grandchildren, Ryus, Fletcher, and Jarrek Mattix, Miette and Tristan Jones, Tyler, Brayden, and Brynlee Adams, Adam, Christian, Isaac, and Eli Bartow, and Landri and Kai Adams; brother John Scherer, Jr. (Jean) of Frisco, Texas; and sisters, Ellen Rose Larson (Gene) of Knoxville, Tennessee and Shirley Carper (Owen) of Newton, Kansas. She was preceded in death by her husband Lyman Adams in April, 2017; parents, John and Anna Scherer; infant daughter, Linda Marie Adams; son, Carl Adams; sister, Hildegard Robertstad; and son-in-law, Chuck Mattix. A service is planned for Saturday, December 2 at 1:30 pm at the Hoxie United Methodist Church with Pastor Jake Schadel presiding. Interment will follow at the Hoxie City Cemetery. Visitation will be from 1:00 pm until 6:00 pm on Friday, December 1 at the Mickey-Leopold Funeral Home. Memorials are suggested to the Hoxie United Methodist Church or the Sheridan County Health Complex Long Term Care Unit in lieu of flowers. Online condolences may be left at www.mickeyleopoldfuneral.com. Doris was a caring wife and mother who loved all her family very much. She left for them a legacy of hard work, love for the Lord and family. She will be missed but her memory will live on with her family and friends for eternity. As Doris would say, “ I’M JUST FINE”!
