Dewey Max Pounds, 76, of Sylvan Grove passed away Sunday, May 29, 2016 at McPherson Care Center in McPherson, Kansas after a short battle with lung cancer. Dewey was the only child of Elias Pounds and Wanda Pounds Hogan. He was born in rural Lincoln County Kansas on July 5, 1939. He graduated from Beloit High School in 1956 and attended Kansas Wesleyan College in Salina, Kansas. He attended Kansas School of Barbering in Wichita and graduated in April of 1961. Upon completion of barber school he was a barber at Liberal, Kansas where he met and married Marilyn L. Zimmerman on April 1, 1962. They divorced in 2004. Dewey was called to duty in the U.S. Army in 1962. He completed Drill Instructor school in Fort Jackson, South Carolina where he became a Drill Sargent. He was transferred to Fort Leonard, Missouri and was a basic training cadre. He was a barber for 12 years. He farmed for 20 years, crop adjusted for 25 years and was a crop insurance agent for 15 years. He took pride in owning Kansas Insurance Agency in Oakley, Kansas and on being a good insurance agent. He was president of the Lions Club in Oakley, Kansas. Survivors include his two sons, Max Pounds and wife Leanna of Hunter, KS; Matt Pounds and wife Sharon of Yuma, CO; his daughter Darla Thornburg and husband Marlon of Coffeyville, KS; one sister, Kandee House and husband Randy of Hutchinson, KS; nine grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to Sylvan Unified High School.
