David Lee Cooper

August 11, 1938 — May 19, 2013

David Lee Cooper passed away Sunday, May 19, 2013, at the Select Specialty Care Hospital in Kansas City, Kansas, at the age of 74. He was born August 11, 1938 at his parent’s rural home in Sheridan County, the third child of Robert and Mary Leah (Richardson) Cooper. David attended local schools and graduated Sheridan County High School with the class of 1956. It was there he met and fell in love with his soul mate, Shirley L. Miller. They were united in marriage on September 8, 1957 at the Hoxie United Methodist Church. They spent the next ten months in Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri where David was stationed. They returned to the Cooper family farm to make their permanent home. They were blessed with three children; Lee, Leisha, and Mark. David and Shirley’s marriage was the ultimate gift they left for their children. They were united as one always, until Shirley’s passing in 2010. David farmed all of his life. He was an active member of the Hoxie Elks Lodge and served as Exalted Ruler. He was also a member of the Grinnell V.F.W. Post where he served on the color guard during Memorial Day for many years. David was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. His favorite times were spent with his wife and his family. Family was his life! He enjoyed reading and playing cards. He loved floating across the dance floor with Shirley. He and Shirley never missed their grandchildren’s events or graduations. Left to cherish his memory are his children; son, Lee and wife Janelle of Hoxie, daughter, Leisha Mencke and husband Randy of Broomfield, Colorado, and son Mark and wife Anna of Platte City, Missouri; grandchildren, Amy Kane and husband Ty of Wichita, Curt Cooper and wife Julia of Hoxie, Jaime and Zoe Mencke of Broomfield, Colorado, and Samantha, Alex, and Eli Cooper of Platte City, Missouri; great-grandchildren, Avery and Levi Kane and Inara Cooper; brother, Joe and wife Marlene; and sister, Karen Gilliland and husband Darel all of Hoxie. David was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Mary Leah Cooper; wife, Shirley Cooper on March 21, 2010; and brother, Robert (Bobby) Cooper.
