Cleo Christine McLaughlin was born August 16, 1920 to Frank and Ruth (McDermed) McShane in Phillips County, Kansas. She passed away Saturday, June 30, 2012 in the Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney, Nebraska at the age of 91. As a young girl, Cleo attended rural schools in Phillips County. She was united in marriage to Vernon McLaughlin December 24, 1939 in Norton, Kansas. They spent many wonderful years on the farm together. She worked alongside Vernon helping him for over 40 years. Vernon passed away October 30, 1982. Cleo was a member of the Quilting Club at Delmar Hall, the VFW Ladies Auxiliary Post 8873, a square dancing club in her younger years, and was a cooking and woman leader for the Bow Creek 4-H Club. Cleo enjoyed housekeeping, gardening, sewing, quilting, dancing and many other things her whole life. She read a book every day from the Stockton Public Library. She was very independent and always joked around with people. Survivors include her daughter, Judy Schroeder and grandson Eric Schroeder of Stockton; sister-in-law Edith McLaughlin of Plainville; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Vernon, and son-in-law Gary Schroeder. Precious memories of Cleo will live on forever and bring comfort to the hearts of her family and friends. Services of remembrance are planned for 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, July 3, 2012 at the Smith-Moore-Overlease Funeral Home in Stockton, Kansas with Pastor Steve Slate officiating. Burial will follow in the Stockton Cemetery. Visitation will be on Monday from 1:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home and on Tuesday from 9 a.m. until the time of service. Memorials are suggested to the Stockton Public Library or the Stockton EMT’s and may be sent in care of Smith-Moore-Overlease Funeral Home, 723 N. 1st, Stockton, KS 67669.
