Clara “Evelyn” (Burkepile) Walden, 90, died Monday, May 28, 2018. She was born in Burlingame, Kansas on September 17, 1927 to Dewey and Ruth (Moats) Burkepile. Evelyn was a graduate of Sheridan Community High School and attended Colorado Women’s College, Denver. On June 16, 1946, Evelyn Burkepile and Jewell N. Walden were married in the Hoxie Presbyterian Church. Together they raised a family of three children, Kathi, Jim, and Karen. Evelyn was a homemaker, worked as a Librarian for the City of Hoxie, and a genealogist. She enjoyed many activities but gardening was one of her favorite. Evelyn was a member of American Legion Auxiliary, life member of Girl Scouts and a Girl Scout Leader for many years. She was also a member of FCE Extension Unit and the Sheridan County Historical Society where she volunteered for several years. Evelyn was a lifelong member of the Hoxie Presbyterian Church working on many committees and serving as the Librarian. Evelyn is survived by her daughters, Kathi and husband Monty of Cincinnati, Ohio and Karen Hujing and husband Randy of Whitewater, Kansas; son, Jim Walden and wife Connie of Hoxie, Kansas; eleven Grandchildren, twenty-six Great-Grandchildren, and one Great-Great Grandchild; brothers-in-law, Adrian Apel of Topeka, Kansas and Harold Larson of Hurst, Texas. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jewell Walden; parents, Dewey and Ruth (Moats) Burkepile; sister, Kathryn Apel; sisters-in-law, Joan Larson and Kathleen Cooper; and brother-in-law, Ted Cooper. A funeral service will be held Friday, June 1, 2018, 11:30 A.M., at the Hoxie Presbyterian Church with Pastor Ben Rhodes officiating. Visitation will be held Thursday, May 31, 2018 at the Mickey-Leopold Funeral Home, from 1:00 P.M. until 8:00 P.M. Family will receive friends from 6:30 P.M. until 8:00 P.M. with a special time for sharing memories of Evelyn. Hoxie Presbyterian Church
Interment will follow in the Hoxie City Cemetery with a lunch served follwing Interment at the Hoxie 4-H Building.
