Cecil Merle Haines passed away Friday, September 13, 2013 at Hays Medical Center in Hays, Kansas at the age of 87. He was born on the family farm in Medicine Township, Rooks County, Kansas October 4, 1925 to Charlie and Vera (Hays) Haines. Cecil attended Chalk Mound Grade School through the eighth grade. He spent most of his life farming and working in the oil patch for Leighton Wells and was united in marriage to Johnita Frances (Zink) on October 23, 1986 in Seneca, Kansas. Cecil was a jolly fellow. He enjoyed his nieces and nephews, his sister Winnie’s children, who grew up close to him and his parents. Whether he was working or playing… hunting or fishing… farming or gardening… Cecil loved being outdoors. From hunting with Pete, his dog, to fishing in local ponds and the Solomon River, the great outdoors was where life happened, where fun was had, and stories were shared with others. Whatever was going on at the time, one thing was for sure, Cecil could be found where he loved to be, outside. Preceding Cecil in death are his parents, Charlie and Vera Haines; sister Winifred “Winnie” Mason and husband Lawrence; brother Duane Haines; niece Louise Mason Johnson; and nephews Dale L. & Delane K. Mason. Left to cherish Cecil’s memory are his wife Johnita of the home; step-sons Gerald Hays and wife Sandy of Augusta, Glenn Hays of Stockton, and Mark Hays of Woodston; sister-in-law Fern Case Haines of Portland, Oregan; nieces Helen Isom and husband Arden of Ogallala Nebraska, Peggy Bockerstetts and husband Eugene of Boerne, Texas; nephew Clifford Mason of Hays, Kansas; two grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
