Anna Catherine Newell was born December 19, 1918 Ilifff, Colorado to the late Jacob B. and Barbara (Younger) Arnold. She passed away on Monday morning, August 13, 2012 in the Sheridan County Health Complex Long Term Care in Hoxie at the age of 93. As a young girl, Anna attended the old Sheridan Country School House where she graduated from the 8th grade. She was a member of the St. Frances Cabrini Catholic Church, St. Ann's Altar Society, St. Frances Sodality, all in Hoxie, and the VFW Auxiliary in Grinnell, KS. Anna was united in marriage to Edward Joseph Newell on December 31, 1945 in Leoville, Kansas. She enjoyed many things in her life to include cooking, canning, gardening, singing, sewing, dancing, playing cards and gambling. She enjoyed working on the rentals in Colby and Hoxie with Ed, picking blackberries and making jelly and traveling to Valentine, Nebraska and Topeka. Anna was a loving mother and grandmother and a very caring person. She loved to visit and always had good stories to tell. Those left to cherish her memory are her sons, Steven Newell and wife Suzie of Hoxie and Stanley Newell and wife Joyce of Hays; daughter, Shirley Heier and husband Delbert of Park; sister-in-law Jen Arnold; ten grandchildren, Kevin Heier and wife Angela, Christine Schneider and husband Jason, Kimberly Campbell and husband Dusty, Carrie Legleiter and husband Leon, Justin Newell and wife Nicki, Clinton Newell and wife Becky, Sara Humphrey and husband Michael, Emily Hartman and husband Lance, Renee Mader and husband Martin and Mason Newell and wife Melanie; and twenty-five great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, Jacob and Barbara Arnold; husband, Edward Newell; five brothers, Simon, Selesdean, Phillip, Pete and John Arnold; and 2 sisters, Helen Hoffman and Josephine Kruse. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:00 a.m. Thursday, August 16, 2012 at the St. Frances Cabrini Catholic Church in Hoxie with Father Earl Befort celebrating. Visitation will be Wednesday from 1:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. with the family receiving friends from 5:30 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home. There will be a Vigil service at 7:00 p.m. Memorials are suggested to Masses or Donor’s Choice and may be sent in care of Mickey-Leopold Funeral Home, PO Box 987, Hoxie, Kansas 67740.
