Alvin Mervin Poore was born December 1, 1911 to R. D. and Julia (Dutton) Poore in Woodston, Kansas. Alvin passed away, December 22, 2011 at the Rooks County Health Center at the age of 100. In his early years, he attended school at Rose Hill Country School and graduated from Woodston Rural High School in 1930. On January 12, 1938 he married Venda Dugan. They have been married almost seventy four years. Alvin was a farmer and stockman in the Woodston area for 81 years. Alvin was a member of the Woodston United Methodist Church, past member of the Jay School Board, Woodston High School Board, Woodston Telephone Board, Rooks County Fair Board in which he served as president for 26 years, a Stockton Co-op Board member and a 4-H club leader. He was a Mason in the Paradise Lodge #290 and achieved his 65 year pin. A treasured man of many, Alvin is survived by his wife, Venda of the home; two sons, Mervin Poore and wife Jeanne of Scott City and Larry Poore and wife Barb of Woodston; two daughters, Mary Ann Holmes and husband Gary Of Fenton, MO and Janet O’Toole and companion Steve Zaragoza of Kansas City, MO; ten grandchildren, Quintin Poore, Justin Poore, Tammy Heim, Michael Poore, Becky Foose, Jennifer Hopkins, Kenyon Holmes, Darren Holmes, Taryn Williams, and Kelli Hammond; thirteen great-grandchildren; and sister, Lucille Earl of Aurora, CO. Alvin was preceded in death by his parents, R.D. “Fred” and Julia; great-grandson, Jacob Thomas Foose; three brothers, Delbert, Earl, and Roy Poore; four sisters, Hanna Poore, Inez Kruger, Alice Combs, and Gladys Jorgensen. Funeral Services are Tuesday, December 27, 2011 at Woodston United Methodist Church at 2:00 p.m. with Reverend Lyle Miller officiating. Visitation will be Monday, from 9:00 a.m. through 8:00 p.m. at the Smith-Moore-Overlease Funeral Home and Tuesday from 11:00 a.m. until service time at the church. Memorials are suggested to the Masonic Lodge or to the Rooks County Free Fair and may be sent in care of Smith-Moore-Overlease Funeral Home, 723 N. First, Stockton, KS 67669.
