Alexander “Alex” Joseph Schwarzenberger, Jr. passed away Saturday, August 20, 2016 at the Sheridan County Health Complex in Hoxie, Kansas at the age of 99. He was born on June 27, 1917 to the late Alexander, Sr. and Walburga (Ziegler) Schwarzenberger in Gove County, Kansas. After serving in the United States Navy during WWII, and being honorably discharged in 1946, he was united in marriage to Leona M. Walters on January 12, 1949 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Hays, Kansas. They were blessed with a son, Robert. Beginning in Gove County, and eventually moving south of Hoxie in Sheridan County, Alex farmed for over 50 years, and enjoyed raising Angus cattle as well. Always a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, friend, and neighbor, when he wasn’t busy working or spending time with family, you could find him at the coffee shop visiting with friends. Alex is survived by his son Robert Schwarzenberger and wife Khyleen of Wichita; brothers Frank Schwarzenberger of Quinter, and Albert Schwarzenberger of WaKeeney; sister Agnes Berens of Hoxie; grandchildren Scott Schwarzenberger and wife Tedi of Wichita, Anne Ciemny and husband Craig of Wichita, Mark Schwarzenberger and wife Kerry of Wichita, and Laura Lehmer and husband Matt of Wichita; and great-grandchildren Zachary Schwarzenberger, Karson Ciemny, Ella Schwarzenberger, Julie Schwarzenberger, Olivia Schwarzenberger, Axel Lehmer and Brandy Lehmer. He was preceded in death by his parents Alexander and Walburga Schwarzenberger; his wife of 62 years, Leona Schwarzenberger; sisters Margaret Selensky, Philomenia Dreher, Cecilia Werth, Dorothy Schneider, and Mary Hoch; and great-grandson Carter Schwarzenberger. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30am on Wednesday, August 24, 2016 at St. Frances Cabrini Catholic Church in Hoxie. Burial will follow in the St. Frances Cabrini Catholic Cemetery. Visitation will be from 11:00am-8:00pm on Tuesday at Mickey-Leopold Funeral Home with a Wake Service at 7:00pm. Memorials are suggested to the church for masses or the Sheridan County Amusement Company and may be sent in care of Mickey-Leopold Funeral Home, P.O. Box 987, Hoxie, KS 67740. At work on the farm, the deep love of his life came together to help meet the deep needs of the world. His legacy of tending, nurturing, and growing, that has touched all of us, will last beyond his lifetime and ours.
