Agnes "Peggy" Tucker

November 4, 1909 — August 10, 2014

Agnes “Peggy” (Mayhew) Tucker passed away Sunday, August 10, 2014, at the Redbud Village in Plainville, Kansas at the age of 104. She was born November 4, 1909 on the family farm in the West Plainville area to Ira and Sadie (Solenberger) Mayhew. Peggy attended West Plainville Grade School traveling by horse and wagon or walking the 2 ? mile daily journey. She graduated from Plainville High School with the class of 1928. During her high school years, she did light housekeeping in exchange for room and board with the Yohe home, Hilger’s home, and Ullery’s Boarding House while school was in session. She went on to receive her Teaching Certificate from Hays Normal School. Peggy taught in several one-room school houses including Hilgers, Union 5, and Harmony Hills schools. She earned $35 per month plus room and board. Later she moved to Colorado Springs and began working as a waitress where she met William T. “Jim” Tucker. They were married on August 3, 1942 in Raton, New Mexico. Becoming a homemaker and living in many different locations because of Jim’s job with the US Army Corps of Engineers, they made their permanent home in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Following Jim’s death on July 9, 1977, Peggy moved to Plainville, Kansas to be near her family. Her hobbies included reading, working puzzles, playing Hand and Foot with friends, and eating out. But most of all, she took great joy in being Aunt to her five nieces and nine nephews, then later to great and great-great nieces and nephews. She took great interest in all of their comings and goings, remembering birthdays, anniversaries, weddings, and any other special events. They were a very special part of her life and she loved naming them one by one, including all of their family members and extended family members. Left to mourn Peggy’s passing is her brother Jesse "Jack" Mayhew and his wife Betty of Plainville, her sister Frances Veatch of Palco, sister-in-law June Mayhew of Stockton, and numerous nieces and nephews. Peggy is preceded in death by her parents Ira and Sadie, husband Jim, brothers Paul Mayhew and Howard Mayhew, and sisters Verda Pendergrass and Lenora Gibson. Reception: Nazarene Church
