Obituary for Herman Mick

Herman Joseph Mick passed away on Monday, November 20, 2017 at Hays Medical Center in Hays, Kansas at the age of 93. He was born on May 5, 1924 in Tipton, Kansas to the late Theodore and Mary (Gasper) Mick. He grew up on the family farm, the youngest of twelve children, and by the age of 12 was already hard at work helping to take care of the farm. In November, 1943 he joined the United States Navy serving as Motor Machinist’s Mate, Third Class, aboard the USS Libra (ADA-12) during World War II. After being honorably discharged from the Navy, he returned home, and on July 29, 1946 was united in marriage to Lenora Elizabeth Adam in Plainville, Kansas. Together, they raised their family as he began work in the oilfield as a driller, along with farming.

Herman enjoyed life on the farm and was an avid gardener. Some of his favorite things to grow were potatoes, watermelons, and even peanuts, but his tomatoes were the top of the list, for he would be disappointed if they didn’t do well. When he wasn’t busy in the garden, he was busy in the woodshop, working and building an array of things for family and friends. Some of the items he built included quilt racks for Lenora’s many quilts, cribs, wooden animals, boxes, plant stands, and wooden containers. He loved serving his family and spending time with them, especially his grandchildren. He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and a Lifetime Member of the VFW Post 8871, both in Plainville.

Herman is survived by his children Dianne Durfee of Wallace, NE, Rose Storment and husband Don of Miami, OK, Kathy Fabac and husband Bill of Smithville, MO, Doug Mick of Plainville, Jim Mick and wife Paula of Plainville, and Dennis Mick and wife Susan of Plainville; thirteen grandchildren; eighteen great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

He preceded in death by his parents Theodore and Mary Mick; wife Lenora Mick; brothers J.T. Mick, Tony Mick, Frank Mick, Ernest Mick, Conrad Mick, Arnold Mick, and Pete Mick; sisters Katherine Stephens, Marie Graves, Margaret Mick, and Theresa Mick; and son-in-law Don Durfee.

Herman enjoyed taking little “excursions” now and then, and when asked where he was going, was often known to reply with, “Out the door.” A man of strong and deep faith, he prayed and trusted in the Lord on a daily basis. Although we love and miss him dearly, our hearts are encouraged as he takes his final excursion toward heaven, where this time he will be heading “IN the door!”

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30am on Saturday, November 25, 2017 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Plainville. Burial will follow in Sacred Heart Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2:00-4:00pm on Friday at the funeral home with Ladies Guild Rosary at 3:00pm; and from 6:00-8:00pm at the church with Prayer Vigil at 7:00pm.
